Keep the tissues within reach because I guarantee you will need them! Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah is a character driven novel that follows the lives of best friends, Kate and Tully. Kate and Tully, Tully and Kate, are the stuff that best friends are made of. They meet at the age of 14 when Tully moves in across the street from Kate on Firefly Lane. The girls could not be more different, but forge an unbreakable bond that carries them through their childhood in the 70's, their college and early career year's in the 80's, and their adult years in the 90's.
Before reading Firefly Lane, I borrowed it to my best friend. She devoured it and told me I needed to read it ASAP so we could discuss. "Yeah, yeah, I will," I said, as I placed it on my bookshelf along with the 1,000 other books I have to read. I stared at this book and it kept beckoning me to read it, so I eventually gave in. I was swept away in the story and characters. Kristin Hannah is a master at creating characters that feel like friends you have known for years and historical fiction storylines that sweep you into a past decade. It is impossible not to become emotionally invested in their story. I always find myself enamored with her writing and she is a perfect author to break you out of a reading funk.
Firefly Lane is one of four books by Kristin Hannah that I have read, but she has countless others published. (Word on the street is she has a new one coming out next year!) Netflix is also currently making Firefly Lane into a limited series! If my review wasn't enough to convince you to read this book, that will give you even more incentive. If you are a fan of historical fiction and character driven books, you will love Firefly Lane.
