It's about time I found a thriller that rocked my socks off. Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney is that! This dark and twisty psychological domestic thriller takes place over the span of an anniversary weekend in a remote rental home kept me reading into the late hours of the night. It has been a long time since I've read a book that I quite literally could not put down. The plot twists kept coming and the finale blew me away. I can honestly say, this is one of the best thrillers I have read since The Silent Patient. And I LOVED The Silent Patient, so this is saying something.
Adam and Amelia embark to a remote Scottish rental house for their ten year anniversary weekend. Adam suffers from prosopagnosia, also known as facial blindness, and is a screen writer with an obsessive streak. The hope is they will mend their fractured marriage, but they each are keeping secrets from each other that are bound to come out.
Rock Paper Scissors is told from two perspectives, husband and wife Adam and Amelia, as well as letters written to Adam on their anniversary. Each year, she writes these letters, but does not let him read them, and they exchange traditional wedding gifts. They are both unreliable narrators and it is unclear who to believe. I kept going back and forth each chapter on what I thought was going on and who I believed was telling the truth. It truly kept me guessing.
I loved the remote location setting during a snowstorm and the church turned rental house that gave off major creepy vibes. It added a chilling aspect to the story. I loved the progression of the plot with the anniversary letters that added texture and background to the story. Each letter gave a little more insight into their marriage and built up anticipation for the ending. There honestly wasn't anything I didn't love about this book. It kept me up well past my bedtime, but was well worth it.
I highly recommend it if you are in the mood for a total mind F**K. I am STILL thinking about that ending. I didn't see it coming! Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney is one I will be recommending for years to come.
5 stars. All the stars.
